Sisters are a special blessing....but I grew up with two brothers in my family. So how do I know what it is like to have a sister?
Well, this I know only because I became a child of God when I asked Jesus into my heart and life in 1991. At that moment,
I became a part of the family of God. I now had an "eternal" extended family of brothers and sisters in Christ who also were born again into the family of God. WOW! What a blessing.
But along with that, I have been especially blessed to have the Lord place on my path special women in my life to encourage and help strengthen me. Meet Mia. Mia gave my daughter piano lessons and we quickly became friends. This special woman took me, a new babe in Christ, a new woman of faith, under her wing and guided me. She helped me overcome my shyness in faith and to be bold for Christ. As an example, I watched her reach out to others in the likeness of Him. In a McDonalds restaurant she approached a tearful elderly woman and sat down to console her. Before long she comforted this unknown woman with her soft spoken voice and told her of the peace to be found in Jesus. A beautiful example of His servant she most certainly was.
Years past, and in November of 2005, she telephoned to tell me she was going to meet her best friend, Jesus. She was told by doctors that she had ovarian cancer and had a short time to live. She was so calm and worried about my feelings more than her limited days. I had been in an auto accident 3 months before, and had cracked ribs and a husband in a wheelchair. I could not make the 800 mile drive to be with her, so we spent what time we could on the phone in long discussion. She was genuinely so happy to be soon in the presence of her best Friend, Jesus Christ. I was overwhelmed by her faith.
In 2004, I met a special sister in Christ through an online christian ladies chat room. Over the years, Vicky has been a tower of strength for me through especially hard trials. She lives in the very north of Maine, and here I am way down in the south of Florida. Quite a long distance friendship! Although we have never met face to face, she is closer to me than anyone can know. As sisters in Christ, we share the love of Jesus Christ who has saved us from our past sin, holds us in His hand, and will never leave us or forsake us. We share the peace of knowing that this is not our home, and someday we will spend an eternity with the One who died for us.
No matter what life can throw at you, you can finish the race of this life. With Jesus as your constant companion, and with the blessing of special women of faith, you will be able to move on down the road and face the dark stretches and fearful valleys.
May something I have said in this post encourage you to seek out others who need you to step into the role of a "sister in Christ." Women of faith need other like-minded women to pray, encourage and support them. This is not our home.
And someday...just like Vicky and I who live so far apart and have never met...we will spend eternity together... with our best Friend!
