We all have our favorite recipe books written by our favorite cooks.
Paula Dean, Giada, or Rachel Ray...I love to try to recreate them all!
I have recipes handed down to me from my mother, grandmother, and mother-in-law. They may be written on cards that are spotted, wrinkled and weathered, but they are special to me and after each use they go back into a special blue-floral box sitting in my kitchen.
Several times a year I go into that box and pull out my favorite recipe's for my family and oftentimes we talk of family no longer with us. Baking & making memories at the same time.
When you do purchase a new recipe book, do you curl up on the couch and just read that book? Heaven's no! You scour it from cover to cover and seek out those recipes that you want to try first.
Why would we buy a recipe book if we were simply going to read it and then place it on a shelf?
A recipe book is a guide, a guide to better cooking. How can we become a cook if we don't follow what it says.
As hard as I try, I am not always the best of cooks.
I have a box full of recipes besides a variety of books by my favorite cooks. You might think that with all of these cookbooks that I must be a great cook, but I'm not.
If we just read the cookbooks and look at the pictures that will NEVER make us a good cook. I can read all of the cookbooks in the world, but that won't make me a cook. To be a cook, I not only have to read the recipe, I have to actually do what it says.
The Bible is like a cookbook. The Bible has God's recipe for becoming a Christian and living a life that is pleasing to Him. A lot of people read the Bible every day. Many of them even go to Sunday School and study the Bible.
But it isn't enough just to read the recipe. Reading the Bible won't make you a Christian any more than reading a cookbook will make you a cook. We must follow the recipe in our daily life.
How about you? What's cooking in your life?
Do you just read the recipe, or are you using it to live a life that is pleasing to God?
Lord, help us to not only read and study your Word, but to follow its teaching to live a life that will be pleasing to you. Amen.
But be doers of the word, and not hearers only, . . . James 1:22
