Families are glued to electronic devices, TV and indoor activities.
This is not good socially, mentally or physically.
I recently read that US military studied how some soldiers were better able to detect roadside bombs and many other hazards better than other soldiers. They studied 800 soldiers over 18 months and found that the best bomb detectors or spotters were rural people.
They were the soldiers who had grown up in the woods hunting turkey or deer. Others who were good detectors were those that came from rough urban neighborhoods, where it is just as important to be alert. Those who sat in from of a video game or computer while growing up did not do so well. Amazing.
We need more tents and fishing poles and less Twitter and Facebook!
Sadly, more and more children today are spending more time indoors, unattached to nature and social life. Schools are spending more time on teaching computers than on time outside at recess or going on field trips.
Children need to be able to develop their social skills, natural senses and mental coping skills to live in the "real" world. The "real" world is not indoors.
It is learning coping skills, social skills and building character and esteem engaging in challenging and competitive activities outdoors. The "real" world is outside your front door. It is discovering natural wonders, coping and understanding how life all fits together. Teach them while they are young.
