My garden is my joy. I spend hours working the soil, planting, pulling and admiring. Now I know that slimy slugs, and other garden destroying pests might be a part of the natural world, but I draw a line when it comes to tolerating them as taking up residence and dining pleasure in my garden.
Here is "1" favorite drink of mine that makes me happy in "2" ways.
It is coffee! COFFEE...it can repel and fertilize!
Coffee grounds are a favorite for those who want to rid the garden of pests without poisoning the ecosystem. Most of us have coffee in the house already, so no extra expense here.
You have got to go! The smell of the coffee repels snails, slugs and ants. You may also have success using coffee grounds to repel cats, rabbits and deer. Research published in September 2014 in the journal Science showed the caffeine in coffee plants evolved as a natural pest repellent.
Coffee can help fertilize soil and repel pests. Coffee grounds contain nitrogen, phosphorus, potassium and other nutrients plants need. Sprinkle the coffee grounds around plants, or mix them into soil as you plant your garden. There isn’t a perfect formula for how much coffee grounds to use, so you may need to try different quantities to determine how much works best in your garden.
Earthworms love to feed on used coffee grounds; it helps them grow and reproduce. Having lots of worms is an excellent way to keep a healthy garden. It is important to have worm activity in your soil; this mixes the soil and helps in mineralizing your vegetation.
What? You don't drink coffee?
You have no coffee grounds to work with?
Well I have read that Starbucks has a policy of giving
away their mountains of spent grounds to patrons
to use for composting and other projects.
I am sure there is a local retailer who would donate their "grounds."
COFFEE has other uses:
Can be used to dye paper or clothes
Can retouch furniture
Can be used as flea repellent, rub on pets (dog, etc.)
Can repel odors around the home
Can be used when cleaning grease
